Specifies the name of the file to be viewed. Wildcard characters are not allowed.
 

The /DESCRIPTION qualifier causes the specified description text to be displayed instead of the filename. This may be useful when the actual filename is not important, or should be concealed from the user. The description text must be enclosed in double quotes if it contains spaces or other special characters. Escape sequences may not be used in the description text.
 

Allow or disallow file extraction. Specifying /EXTRACT allows the user to extract portions of the displayed file to another file. /NOEXTRACT disables this feature.
 

The /LINES qualifier causes the current line numbers being displayed to be shown on LIST's status line. It will also show the total number of lines, and the location of the current line from the top of the file as a percentage. If the full file specification will not fit with the line numbers (and the /SHORT qualifier was not specified), the shortened form of the filename will be displayed instead. Line numbers may be turned on or off while viewing the file with the L and N keys.
 

The /POSITION qualifier sets the initial display position within the file. Specify one of the following keywords:
 

TOP	Sets the initial position to the top of the file. This is the default.
BOTTOM	Sets the initial position to the bottom of the file.
HALF	Sets the initial position half-way through the file.
LINE:n	Sets the initial position to line n of the file.

 

Allows or disallows file printing capabilities. /PRINT gives the user the option to print selected portions of the displayed file. /NOPRINT disables this feature.
 

Display progress messages when reading the file. List displays a message "Reading line n" while the file is being read into memory. This message is updated every 100 lines. The /NOPROGRESS qualifier disables this feature.
 

The /QUIET qualifier supresses terminal beeps when an error occurs or when a broadcast message is displayed.
 

Displays horizontal and/or vertical ruler(s) in the display. Specify one or both of the following keywords:
 

HORIZONTAL	Display a horizontal ruler. This is the default when /RULER is specified with no option list.
VERTICAL	Display a vertical ruler (i.e. line numbers).

 

The /SHORT qualifier causes the file name and type only to be displayed on LIST's status line. The node, device, directory, and version number are omitted. Use the /NOSHORT qualifier to display the full file specification.
 

Allows or disallows DCL subprocess spawning. /SPAWN allows the user to temporarily suspend LIST and create a DCL subprocess. The user can then log out of the subprocess to return to LIST. /NOSPAWN disables this feature.
 

Displays the current version number of LIST. Do not specify the filename parameter with this qualifier.
 

The /WIDE qualifier causes the display to be in 132 columns, instead of the default of 80 columns. Once the file is being displayed, the screen width mode may be toggled with the 'W' key.
 

This command views the file LOGIN.COM in the current default directory. The full file specification will be displayed on LIST's status line, and no line numbers will be shown.
 

This command views a file SYS$LOGIN:NUMBERS.TXT, but places the text "My Phone Numbers" on the status line, intead of the file name.
 

This command views the file SYS$MANAGER:SYLOGIN.COM;-1. List will display the shortened filename (SYLOGIN.COM) and will show line numbers on the status line.
 

This command views the file USERS.RPT in the default directory. Warning beeps are turned off with the /QUIET qualifier. The initial viewing position is set to the bottom of the file with the /POSITION qualifier. "Reading Line" messages are turned off while the file is being read with the /NOPROGRESS qualifier.
